Gavin Brooks

The decision to be fully engaged in the pursuit of excellence in painting defines Gavin Brooks as an artist on a journey.  I have ambition for my  paintings to mature although each canvas is part of a greater a experience.  Time. experience and study of nature makes for a voyage and a history that gives significance to my paintings..

Gavin began painting outdoors in childhood along the coast of Maine. Her interest continued through adulthood.  In her thirties, practical adult careers in illustration, advertising and publishing were discarded in favor of a classical art education at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore. Drawing, sculpture, still life, portrait and figure study remain important elements in Gavins education, However, it was the grand American landscapes of Edgar Payne and John Singer Sargent that compelled her to study with todays contemporary masters.

Gavin travels through out America to paint scenes of grand spaces.  Her landscape subjects speak of pristine wilderness unchanged by modern times.  Excursions into forests, along rivers and coastline are sources of inspiration and study for larger paintings.  Major nfluences in her technique and commitment are mostly attributed to the workshops and fellowship of Scott Christensen.   His understanding of subtle color harmony and reserve are potent influences in my development as a painter.

Gavin is a member of Oil Painters of America, The Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, The Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association.  She is a Signature Member of the National Academy of Professional  Plein Air Painters.   Her paintings are in collections throughout the US and Europe, She resides in Towson, Maryland with her husband Harvey and two daughters Cait and Charlotte.
